A Cross-Platform App Design Tool Is on the Horizon
Long gone are the days when designers worked on one central platform, or designed for one specific type of hardware. In today's world, designers must design products that properly function on not only desktop computers, but also on a wide variety of mobile and IoT devices, all with a maddening array of different screen formats and capabilities.
However, until now many of the tools designers commonly use were very much platform specific. Many of these tools are legacy applications that were originally created in the pre-Internet era and were used primarily for creating print graphics. That is, static non-interactive images. They were also created specifically for desktop computers, and often only for one operating system in particular: MacOS. Those who work on Windows or Linux or ChromeOS — and there are many of these types of designers — were out of luck.
A lot of those out of luck are designers who, for a variety of reasons, do not have access to a Mac. This limits their career opportunities and may even preclude some talented people from making digital design their career.
Some design tools also require not only an Internet connection, but also a quality Internet connection, again precluding many designers from having proper access to them.
But Phase will be different. When it is released, which should be within the next few months, it will be a truly cross-platform design tool. This means that it will not only run on the web, but there will also be desktop apps for MacOS, Windows, Linux and even ChromeOS. What's more, it will work even if do not have a quality Internet connection. You can save your work offline and then make any adjustments that are necessary when you get back online.
Phase will further allow for real-time collaboration, and it will have a built-in version control system that will include branching and merging. But most of all, it will be a tool that has been created from the bottom up for creating dynamic and interactive content.
