It is a problem that has long plagued graphic designers and others who work with photographic images: how to easily remove the background from a photo. A new web app, though, hopes to change this. remove.bg makes it easy to remove background elements from images of people in just a few seconds. Simply upload your photo and it removes the background automatically without any interaction whatsoever. How Does the App Work?
The app uses what the developers call "sophisticated AI technology" to separate the foreground image from its background elements. They also utilize a set of algorithms to prevent color contamination and to improve the separation of the foreground from the background.
The developers of the app have a mailing list for those interested in the details of the processes that they use. What Are the Limitations of the App?
Currently, the app only works for images that contain people and/or faces in the foreground. This is because their AI technology is only trained to detect these types of subjects in an image. Though the developers of the app hope to support other types of images in the future, such as product images. They are also open to requests from users regarding other types of images.
Another current limitation of the app is that output images are limited to 500 x 500 pixels. Though you can upload any size image. The developers of the app say that they hope to get beyond this limitation in the future. Those who sign up for the mailing list will get notified when higher resolution output is available. Is There an API Available?
Software developers wishing to incorporate this technology into their own work can use an application programmers interface (API). The API is currently in beta, and those who would like to try it can sign up for it. The app developers will also notify those on the mailing list when a stable, production-ready API is available.
