Tobias Schramm built his website in July of 2021 using only a $50 graphing calculator. Although images found on the website are not hosted on the calculator, it’s still impressive that this small calculator is acting as a server. By enabling IP address recognition and linking his Casio calculator to his internet service provider (ISP), Mr. Schramm is able to share information with people around the world. The calculator does this while still being able to perform its primary function as well.

Innovations like this open up new possibilities for tinkerers, hobbyists, and programmers. Repurposing old technology challenges savvy programmers. Repurposing also gives new life to objects that would otherwise be recycled or trashed. This kind of innovation creates all sorts of new possibilities. Best of all, it allows for experimentation with a reduced carbon footprint.

Wonderfully, Mr. Schramm is very public with his process. Linking information about the website to all his social media accounts allows for other people to create their own mini servers. This kind of creation and sharing is celebrated in tinkerer and hacker communities. People with otherwise limited means could pick up a used calculator for as little as $15 and create their own website from scratch.
