Regular visitors to Reddit have noticed that pictures or comments are met with a new pop-up. Instead of allowing users to view content, they are bring prompted to sign in or create an account. In fact, some are reporting that no other options exist to access the site once the message appears.
This is not the first time Reddit has pushed users to interact via a logged in account. In the past, users on mobile devices have been met with a prompt that asks them to try the Reddit app instead of reading through an online browser. It's important to note that this occurred whether users were accessing the site through Wi-Fi or traditional smart phone plans.
Unlike some sites that choose to send readers to a subscription plans, Reddit remains free to use. Pop-ups among other sites usually lead to paywalls or similar blocked content. Choosing to use a pop-up to push users to accounts could be for two big reason: counting reader numbers and keeping an eye on use content.
Running an Internet based company has become an increasingly competitive field. User numbers not only became a way to show off the site's popularity, but a way to show advertisers and possible investors that the company has potential. While visitors can be tallied, having subscribers that sign in gives the company a stronger base to use
for growth. Another aspect is tracking reader's use of the site. While Reddit is not currently selling data, other sites are trying this method of making money. Basically, they track what someone reads, where they go on the site, and other data entered at the time of sigh up.
While the pop-up ad may be appearing for some and others are skating through the system that could change in the future if Reddit decides this method works. For now, users may have a choice if they want to keep reading their favorite content. Clearing out the cache or cookies should give them more time to finish an article.
