Use Eight Border Radii to Create Stunning Organic Visual Effects
Sometimes, you do not want perfect geometric shapes for your CSS designs. Perhaps you want a more organic-looking shape that has irregular borders or features. This gives more individuality to the look of your page. You can now do this with the eight value system for creating border radii in CSS. Using eight values allows you to create different radii for organic shapes that look more in tune with nature.
You can specify where you want each of the radii that you create with the eight values. You could do extreme radii between relatively average-sized radii, giving you the opportunity to create more visual interest in your display. This entire setup is accomplished through an old and oft-forgotten trick of CSS, which is its basic property attribute for determining the radius for border edges. You do not always have to use the newest functions in order to create a stunning effect.
Using eight different border values creates an organic shape because of the way that the old CSS attributes work. When you choose one value, all corners are curved by that value. The corners all look the same. This can be visually pleasing, but it is not an organic look. When you use four values, you are able to create different-looking corners. Keep in mind that you can use some fixed values and some percent values to change things up a bit.
By adding a slash mark and specifying fixed or percent values before and after the slash mark, you are creating separate values for the vertical and horizontal curves for the corners. The slash mark property essentially creates eight corners on your shape. With eight numbers in use, you can end up with shapes that look like a droplet, blob or even an organic cell. This property of CSS is worth experimenting with in your design process. Try slightly different variations and see which one delivers the results that you desire. Remember that these radii effects can also be combined with different colors and background fillers for a bigger visual impact on the finished look of your site design.
