Website Building Tools Available On Google SItes: A Primer
Technology market analysts who follow Google wonder what took the company so long to launch a comprehensive website builder. Even though Google Sites has been around since 2008, early versions were no better than the first enterprise website packages offered by Microsoft in the early days of Office 365. In 2021, Google Sites are just as good as what you can expect from competitors such as Squarespace, and they have attracted the attention of web designers who wish to launch personal projects.
As long as you stay within the 15 GB storage limit of Google Sites, you can create as many websites as you want for free. The website builder got a major upgrade in September 2021, and you can either upload your code, start off with blank canvas, or customize existing themes and templates. If you have your own domain, you can transfer it to Google Sites by changing the name servers and modifying the DNS configuration so that it directs to your Google account.
The initial version of Google Sites only included three templates: Home, Shop, and Portfolio. Today, you can choose from nearly 1,000 pre-designed templates. You can add more templates by paying $3 a year or $20 per month. Although you can create a personal or corporate website with Google Sites, you will not be able to run any type of eCommerce business. You will be restricted to selling products or services from your own network of social media accounts. But that’s okay, since Google Sites provides many of the tools you need to create a website, and there is a wide array of tools to assist you in creating a personalized website.
The website builder is pretty intuitive and easy to use. After creating a Google account, you will be directed to your dashboard where you can create a site. The interface is divided into four sections: Main Navigation Bar You can choose from a few options to start your website. By default, the main navigation bar includes the categories Home, About, Blog, and Services. If you don’t want to include the categories, you can create custom categories. You can also choose to create a template for your website (one of the templates is included with your free trial).
